What is Shabe Yalda?

Celebrate Yalda in Divan Restaurant of McLean!

Shabe Yalda (شب یلدا) is a traditional Iranian/Persian celebration marking the longest night of the year — the winter solstice — usually on December 20 or 21.

🎉 What it’s all about

  • It’s a festive gathering of family and friends to celebrate the arrival of winter.

  • The name literally means “Night of Yalda” (Yalda referring to “birth,” tied to the rebirth of the sun).

  • People stay up late, often until sunrise, to share food, stories, poetry, and laughter.

🍉 Traditional foods & customs

Some common traditions include:

  • Eating watermelon — believed to protect against illness and bring good health in the winter.

  • Pomegranate — symbolizing life and glow in the darkness.

  • Nuts, dried fruits, sweets — a spread of festive snacks.

  • Reading poetry, especially Hafez — a beloved part of the evening.

  • Gathering together to stay warm and celebrate light over darkness.

🌙 Cultural significance

Shab Yalda is one of the oldest Persian traditions, celebrating the return of longer days after the longest night. It’s a time of family unity, reflection, gratitude, and hope.
