Celebrate Yalda in Divan Restaurant of McLean!

Shabe Yalda (شب یلدا) is a traditional Iranian/Persian celebration marking the longest night of the year — the winter solstice — usually on December 20 or 21.
🎉 What it’s all about
It’s a festive gathering of family and friends to celebrate the arrival of winter.
The name literally means “Night of Yalda” (Yalda referring to “birth,” tied to the rebirth of the sun).
People stay up late, often until sunrise, to share food, stories, poetry, and laughter.
🍉 Traditional foods & customs
Some common traditions include:
Eating watermelon — believed to protect against illness and bring good health in the winter.
Pomegranate — symbolizing life and glow in the darkness.
Nuts, dried fruits, sweets — a spread of festive snacks.
Reading poetry, especially Hafez — a beloved part of the evening.
Gathering together to stay warm and celebrate light over darkness.
🌙 Cultural significance
Shab Yalda is one of the oldest Persian traditions, celebrating the return of longer days after the longest night. It’s a time of family unity, reflection, gratitude, and hope.
